Psychoanalytic profiling of terrorists often involves assumptions about a posited frustration of some basic psychological needs. Indeed, psychologists have been able to show that people have fundamental psychological needs, which may be summarized here as the need for autonomy (the experience of volition and willingness), relatedness (experience of warmth, bonding and care) and competence (the experience of effectiveness and mastery) (Vansteenkiste, Ryan & Soenens 2020).
