EFSAS meets Researchers of prestigious Dutch Institutions

EFSAS held a meeting with Mr. Ward Berenschot, who researches local democracy, clientelism and identity politics in South Asia at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). Issues like Terrorism in the region and Chinese strategic ambitions were discussed during the meeting and what effect this could cause for the local political environment in countries like India and Pakistan. Different Confidence Building Measures which could be undertaken in the political atmosphere of respective countries in order to create a more workable relation and search for opportunities to solve long standing conflicts were also explored whereby it was stressed that cultural exchanges, business and sports could prove to be good starting points. Opportunities to for collaboration between EFSAS and KITLV on future research projects was also discussed.

Mr. Dušan Vejinović and Ms. Mara Nicolai (EFSAS) also met with Mr. Theo Bouma, Country Relations Manager and Regional Director Asia at Oxfam Novib, a world-wide development organisation that mobilizes the power of people against poverty. Inequality in South Asia, as a result of conflicts, terrorism and bad governance fuelled by corruption, was a topic of the discussion. It was emphasised that diminishing the hate between countries by solving conflicts are the first steps towards fighting terrorism which in turn will tackle issues like corruption and bad governance. Funds for Defense and Security can be better used to fight inequality, poverty and illiteracy in order to establish more financial homogenous societies in South Asia.
