Renowned Professor in Criminal Law calls upon EFSAS

Ms. Alette Smeulers, Professor in Criminal Law and Criminology of International Crimes at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) called upon the European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS) at its office in Amsterdam. Ms. Alette Smeulers is a renowned author of various books, public speaker and an expert in researching Causes of international crimes, International criminal prosecution, Criminology of international crimes, Perpetrators of international crimes and its relation to Terrorism. 

As Ms. Smeulers years-long research has been focused on international crimes, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and other gross human rights violations as well as terrorism and because of the fact that her work is based on an inter- and multidisciplinary background, she is considered an expert in this field. While highlighting various political, social, economic issues in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and other countries of South Asia, as well as growing radicalization ad threat of Terrorism, in the region, Director of EFSAS, Mr. Junaid Qureshi, expressed a keen interest in seeking Ms. Smeulers expertise while EFSAS researches the phenomenon of Terrorism in relation to International prosecution, International (State) responses and preventive measures by state actors.

EFSAS also proposed to assist and guide any of her students in their academic work related to Terrorism, Human Rights and International Relations in general and the region of South Asia in particular. Professor Alette Smeulers expressed her interest to assist EFSAS in its research and in its efforts of highlighting issues in South Asia. In addition, she agreed to speak at EFSAS’ future events on Terrorism from her perspective as a Scholar in Criminology and thereby attempt to elaborate the various underlying aspects of the subject.
