EFSAS Interview with Ms. Peymana Assad - Councillor Labour Party (UK) - on Afghanistan, Pakistan and the West
In an exclusive interview held at EFSAS office in Amsterdam, part of the series 'Plain Talk; South Asia', Mr. Junaid Qureshi, Director EFSAS, interviewed Ms. Peymana Assad Councillor for Roxeth, South Harrow on the London Borough of Harrow Council and the first Afghan-origin elected to public office in the UK. During the interview, Ms. Assad thoroughly discussed the current political situation in Afghanistan and the possible outcomes. She also elaborated on the role of the role of the Pakistani Military Establishment, India, China and the West. Ms. Assad shared that education and awareness raising is of crucial importance in the prevention of jihadism and that many who went overseas to fight were faced with the unexpected reality of having to commit hostilities against fellow Muslims, which in hindsight made them question their choice to go in the first place. She believes that any development of Afghanistan will have to occur from the ground up, but this is only possible if the Taliban lets the country flourish by not suppressing any potential with repressive policies.
