The China factor, meanwhile, can be expected to play a major role in determining the nature and scope of the US – India relationship. A supporter of engagement with Beijing since the 1970s, Biden held extensive meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping when both served as Vice-President in 2011. Biden’s stance toward China, however, has hardened over the past decade. On the campaign trail, Biden was highly critical of Beijing for its actions in Hong Kong, dubbed its policies towards the Uyghurs of Xinjiang “unconscionable”, and called the Chinese President a “thug”.
